Most of the materials I use for earrings are biodegradable, except for some acrylic wool, embroidery thread and sequence. The studs are reusable if removed properly.

Even though I have a LOT of synthetic wool in stock, I’m leaning towards the idea of not using them for textile jewellery anymore from next month. My favourite is always Alpaca, Merino and Mohair, with pencil coloured 100% cotton and felt. But I love adding a bit of sequence. (Dilemma!)

Fast fashion is a planet killer. But throwing out the non-biodegradable, wearable items we currently own, out of disappointment for their negative effect on our environment, is not the solution either. Recycling should always be the first option.

When it comes to creating sellable products, a conscious choice of what is sent out into the world matters.

Over the weekend I told someone if I could have one wish it would be biodegradable sequence. Today I discovered there is a London-based company already producing just that!

I don’t have their sequence. So, for the next foreseeable future, I’ll still use sequence from my current supply, but won’t stock up again with the plastic option.

Switching over to a more sustainable way of creating, I’d like my future textile creations to one day disappear once again into nothingness. The studs and sequence should be removed for reuse before discarding the rest of the earrings.

We don’t snap our fingers and fix the world in one day.

We make it better with the conscious choice of materials used for new products we produce and having knowledge of what happens to items we purchase after we no longer need them.

Conscious consumerism should be part of our higher standards in our lifestyle choices we make every day.
